LOCAL CRITICS LOVE “SPOON RIVER: THE CEMETERY ON THE HILL”
“The show is hauntingly beautiful. It will give you the chills, but in a good way, because you will be given a special insight into the life of a very passionate spirit. A spirit that was once a real, complicated person, one who was too shy to share such secrets with you.”

“Masters’ language gives the story of each of these lives a compelling urgency, no matter how rich or common.”

“The anthology is based on the work of Edgar Lee Masters. Director/writer Maureen Lucy O’Connell intensifies its core into a vibrant, entertaining whole. . . The engaging cast has the challenging task of multiple roles…O’Connell is particularly adept in allowing her talent to shine in the confines of a few lines or a short soliloquy.”

“Spoon River Anthology is one of Masters’ most well known works, and this production is a top notch paean to his iconic style…It is a wonderful, cohesive ensemble, complete with lively (ironically) song and dance numbers.”

“The ten actors in this presentation each played several roles, and the transitions were smooth and convincing. The details of their lives …were presented by the spirits themselves, each coming forth from the beyond to give us a glimpse of the life they lived before being eternally planted on the hill. Some of the characters are solitary, some have intertwining stories, and all are loosely woven together with snippets of Americana music. The format of the presentation was lively and fun, but with its somber moments as well, and kept the audience looking forward to the next voyeuristic glimpse into someone’s life lived long ago.”

“Masters zeroes in on human vanities and shortcomings and disappointments - the same heartaches that afflict us today…Adapter/director Maureen Lucy O’Connell’s piece mixes a selection of poems, recounted by nine performers who depict multiple characters with a medley of folksy hymns and songs…The performances take place around Ryan Siebrasse’s uncluttered set, which suggests a cemetery, with everyone uniformly dressed in dark clothes…underscoring the solemnity of the ashes-to-ashes message.”
